Mino Ara Begum came from B Baria Upazilla before 12 years with one of her neighbours due to poor condition of her family. Coming in Chittagong she taken a job in garments factory and get marriage with her colleague. But her husband used to torture her. After 08 years of marriage she divorces her husband. Mino Ara Begum is working in the Lushy Garments Ltd as a folding man for 03 years, card no. 1501. She received leadership training on Training techniques, Labour law 2006, Leadership development, Mediation and negotiation techniques for conflict management which organized by OWDEB. She has formed 20 PEGs in her factory. As a PEG leader she is keeping rule to solve the work related problems of workers. Last year through the intervention of Mino Ara Begum 13 workers had got their due wages and 01 worker has got her maternity benefits. One of her colleague name Ms. Anowara Begum was going to be mother but factory authority didn’t not allow her maternity leave because the complainant joined in the factory only 06 months before. Also, she is discharged from factory. Knowing the matter Ms. Mino Ara Begum discussed with OWDEB legal advisor. Than she goes to factory manager with her colleague and were able to understand that according to labour law the complainant must be get maternity benefits. As a result her colleague were enjoyed the benefits. This way, last year she was written an application to the authority to decorate and reactive the child care room for the benefits of mother workers. Although, in this factory had a child care room but that was useless. Responding the worker’s appeal the factory authority decorated and active the room and appointed a caretaker. Mentionable that Ms. Mino Ara Begum was formed a forum named “ RMG Young Female Leader Forum”. She is president of this forum. The forum is working to organize RMG workers at Chittagong from 2009.
Ms. Jutchna Akter is a PEG leader of Global Garments Ltd. Since 2010 she has been working in this garment as an operator, card no. 4891. She didn’t know as a worker about her rights and responsibilities. She didn’t not know how to bargain or negotiate to solve job related problems. In 2009 Ms. Jutchna is sharing with her few problems in the factory with one of her colleague name Ms. Juthi. She informed Jutchna that here have an organization named OWDEB they are arranged training for garments workers about labour law and providing legal support. One day Ms. Jutchna participated in a PEG training. Than she achieved many daylong leadership training like Training techniques, Labour law 2006, Leadership development, Mediation and negotiation techniques for conflict management which organized by OWDEB. In May Day 2009 Ms. Jutchna received crest from honorable industry minister Mr. Dilip Barua as a best leader. In the year 2011 one day a buyer representatives came for factory visit. They asked to workers do they know about labour law 2006 and asked some question about labour law. Ms. Jutchna well replied about labour law. That is why the representative urged to the workers to elect her as a participatory committee member. Ms. Jutchna shares the matter with OWDEB. OWDEB project team communicates with factory manger and do advocacy to form participatory committee. As a result, in the global garment participatory committee was formed. Ms. Jutchna Akter was elected as a participatory committee member. This participatory committee in this factory is sited meeting regular as per law. Ms. Jutchna Akter also got training on Mediation and negotiation techniques. So, she is keeping good rule to develop good relationship workers between owners as a participatory committee member.
Noor Nahar came from Noakhali thana before 12 years with her husband at Chittagong for work. She has 2 daughters and 01 son. Her husband is a hotel worker. Due to poor income of her husband since 2005 she joined in the garments factory to help her family. This way in the middle of 2009 she joined in the Miraj Garments Ltd in Chittagong as an operator. She lives in Rahaman Shaheb colony with her husband and children. One day she came for training as a PEG member in the women’s café on new labour law 2006. There she had known about rights and responsibility of a worker also legal support of OWDEB organization. Noor Nahar received PEG Leader training from Shaheed Para Women’s café in March 2012. After the training Noor Naher come to know that every RMG worker have the rights to enjoy the minimum wage fixed by the government. But she observed that as an operator she didn’t get minimum wage. Last January she claimed her minimum wage to factory manager by written application. The factory manager burned with fire at the first reaction. The manager thrown her application and shout on her. Noor Nahar became frustrated and came to the women’s café. And share this incidence with the PEG leader supervisor. Then the facilitator advised her. Next day Noor nahar and her PEG group go to the manager at lunch time and again claimed for their minimum wage. At that time manager told them he will consider the matter. Next day Noor Nahar goes to her factory but factory authority dismissed her from the job without showing any cause. She shared this matter with the legal advisor. The legal advisor lent a hand to write and send a grievance letter claiming her due wages & ensuring minimum wage to every workers in the factory by a registry letter. The factory authority denied it. So, another notice is sent again. Than factory authority call her in the factory and request her to join in work. Noor Nahar threw them two conditions – firstly all of her dues have to pay with compensation and secondly, must have to pay minimum wage to factory workers.
After one week, factory manager called legal advisor to a negotiation meeting over a phone call. The negotiation meeting held on 23rd February in the head office of OWDEB. Through negotiation the factory authority paid due wage 3,700/- taka and as compensation 2000/- taka to Noor Naher. Also the factory authority ensured that they will pay minimum wage according to law.
